Cloudbase views on a slow day! Atos VQ Race 5-26 /24 Tekoa #hanggliding
Started out looking great. Slow climbs, low cloud base and more cloud cover really made it tough. Had fun time hanging in there. Made the best of it.
A few sprinkles breaking down.

Windy day. Broken ratty thermls in the beginning. As I got to the mtns they got better. Really fun flight to see the mtns. Don't fly that why very often as there isn't to far you can go. Gets to be very limited landing options. And didn't want to land in the valley on a windy day. Rowdy trying to land, still early in the day. Started out looking like a very good day. Near Wilber conditions were changing. Changed gears and slowed down. Poked out into the blue, wasn't very inspiring. Managed to limp it back home. Fun out and return and what ended up as the last tow of the season. Can't thank Martin and Mia enough for all the great flights!! • @MikeBomstad
      @MikeBomstad 29 днів тому

      The tone was the sink alarm, its set to 200 fpm (as a reminder to get going when you hear it) when it stopped, I hit some lift, I said ahh fuck because I was going to be long already, as it was boutent in the LZ and I was going to be longer now. (more walk back) Not the end of the world, but I like to play the "its a small LZ" game in a big one as practice for when I really need it, like here ua-cam.com/video/ImEg6WRsxcw/v-deo.html

      yes it does! Stall speed is only a few mph more than a topless. It is heavier though. Real pleasure to fly, power steering. I see many belly landing them intentionally. Glad you enjoyed! Happy to take you along.

    Looks like you were on glide from ~Hartline to Mansfield. Cloud street, or evening glass-off? Nice upwind glide @ 6:00.

    • @MikeBomstad
      @MikeBomstad 3 місяці тому

      Almost a 28 mile glide! around 40 min. Started between Almira and Heartline to the N. Took a turn a few miles before Mansfield the yielded nothing. The cloud cover mellowed things out. Wasn't much in the way of sink. Air felt neutral. It was a very nice glide :-) Track log link is in the description

      @@MikeBomstadI attempted an out and return to Sims from the Butte one summer. On the return leg there was a cloud street running from the highway to Canada, seemingly. I got up in that and went on glide to Omak airport, my longest ever. Slightly off course, but worth it. The flats can be amazing and humbling, so many memories! I miss flying there. Thanks for the video Mike, and great job.

    Being an old geography buff and having never visited the Grand Coulee region, it was wonderful to see it from the air and track your progress on google earth. This makes one appreciate how far and fast migrating birds can fly, also the dust devil views were great. Thanks so much for posting.

      I am glad to share the experience. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it. Yes, birds are very incredible, so much more efficient than we are. And the dust devils out there are truly amazing. The dust is very fine particles, so it's picked up very easily by the thermals..... and my socks LOL

    Hi Mike. What good views. What dream clouds! Here in Argentina we have some similar landscapes. The quality of the flights at this time of year amazes me! Do they fly in summer or is it very strong? Are there more pilots in your area? You always fly alone. Greetings and thanks !

      Hi, We do get some very amazing clouds! This flight was from the end of July last year. (Catching up on videos) Summer is the best time of year here. Normally Martin will tow up first, that gives him around a 30 min head start. On a rare occasion I can catch up with him, normally I cut corners to do it. There is usually only 3 of us, 2 pilots and the tow operator. Cheers!

    Watching your video while snowbird camping at Wallaby Ranch. I've flown my VQ 10 times this winter in thermal less than 600fpm. Still learning at 73yrs old. maybe we share thermal sometime? How many strobes mounted to you and glider? Peace

    • @MikeBomstad
      @MikeBomstad 3 місяці тому

      Excellent, Ive been following your vids. They are a great glider aren't they :-) We are always learning, when that stops the trouble starts! Would love to share a thermal someday. The helmet one was the smallest of the bunch, didn't seem to do much. Have a larger on the back of the verio and one on the bottom of the keel. We are still testing to see if it helps. They were some cheap drone strobes, bright in person. Yet to validate if they are effective air to air..... Best of air to you.

      It really depends on the dusty, some are mild others ferocious like a badger. A lot of times you can be close and find some lift without getting in the ugly part. Easier to poke at them with an Atos 😎 Yes! it was screaming like a homesick angel. Thought for sure it was going to be an easier day than it was. You just never know! Glad to hear you enjoy them.
